Millipede Invasion

Millipede, Chamberlinius hualienensis

More powerful than a locomotive! No, not superman. Millipedes!

The millipede, Chamberlinius hualienensis, is a native of Taiwan. It was accidentally introduced to Okinawa, Japan in 1983 and has become invasive. In Kyushu, Japan it has become a pest. Swarms invade homes. Some large populations swarm train tracks. In one instance, crushed millipedes caused a train to lose traction and stopped the train with their slime. Who could have predicted?
