New Zealand Glowworm

The New Zealand glowworms are larvae of the fungus gnat, Arachnocampa luminosa. These larvae are found in dark caves where they spin snares that hang from the ceiling. Like fireflies the larvae glow in the dark. Their glow resembles a starry sky and may attract insects that have flown into the cave and are orienting to the glowworm light as they try to leave.
